You Are What You Eat ~ Vegan vs. Vegetarian

As a teenager and young adult growing up, I suffered from bad headaches and terrible constipation. My head hurt so much that I was convinced that I had a tumor or something going on in my head. So I went to a doctor and requested that he have my head x-rayed. He did and the results were negative. Back then doctors did not do too much nutrition in their studies. (I’m in my seventies now). Going forward, I married at 21 years of age, had three children and still suffered with the headaches and constipation. We started attending church and the denomination we joined practiced health reform where vegetarianism was not a doctrine of their faith but was encouraged. We decided to give it a try and became lacto ova vegetarians (meaning we still ate dairy products but no meat). That started in 1972. The headaches and constipation stopped right away, and I still hardly ever have either one.

In 1982 we went to an institution to become medical missionaries. There they practiced veganism. We have been vegans since then with great results considering that we are now both in our seventies and still have good health. We get the minerals and vitamins that our bodies need from the food that we eat. I strongly believe that we are what we eat. It is a bit more difficult with the food nowadays because of all the things done to it. So we do the best we can to find the most natural foods and ask God to bless it.

Why I don’t eat meat. The way animals are treated in preparing them for human consumption is awful. Animals are becoming more and more diseased because they are more confined, suffer from lack of exercise and fresh air, fed unnatural foods, hormones and antibiotics to make them get fatter faster for the market. Flesh was never the best food, but its use is now doubly objectionable because diseases in animals are increasing so rapidly. Worldly doctors cannot account for the rapid increase of disease among the human family. But we know that much of this suffering is caused by the eating of dead flesh. So I find it best to leave it alone.

Milk, cheese, eggs and butter are not safe for the same reasons. Animals are diseased and those diseases are passed on to us through consumption of these animal products. Although milk is for the calf, we as humans find it necessary to stay on milk all our lives whereas when the calf is old enough the mother weans its young. Cheese is made from the milk and then, during the aging process, it molds. Is that healthy? The spores of the mold are still in the cheese. Just leave it in the refrigerator for a while and watch it come back. I remember as a child I was taught to just cut the mold off and it was good to eat. Likewise with eggs, considering the way the chickens are treated and fed, do we want to eat those? If you insist, find some free range. I worked in a bakery, and I stopped eating eggs before I became vegan because of the gross things I saw. Butter is made from the same unhealthy animals, and I choose to leave it alone. God told us in His word “Behold I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed: to you it shall be for meat. Gen. 1:29. God said it I believe it and that settles it for me.
